What a prenote tests
A prenote communicates account and routing instructions through the ACH network without transferring funds. It supports an account setup process but does not itself prove ownership or authorization.
How live entries become zero-dollar records
The generator retains appropriate receiver and batch context, uses eligible prenote transaction codes, sets amounts to zero, and rebuilds traces and controls.
Timing and response handling
- Follow current Nacha and ODFI timing requirements.
- Monitor Returns and Notifications of Change.
- Correct reported account data before live use.
- Keep authorization evidence outside the file.
Prenotes compared with micro-entries
Prenotes carry no value, while micro-entries use small credits and potentially offsetting debits under a separate verification framework. Choose the process approved by the organization and ODFI.
Questions about ACH prenotes
Does a prenote move money?
No. It is a zero-dollar ACH entry.
Does no response guarantee the account is valid?
No. Continue to monitor exceptions and follow the ODFI process before sending live entries.
Is a prenote the same as a micro-entry?
No. Micro-entries use small monetary amounts and have separate rules and procedures.
