Differences the comparison highlights

The result surfaces added, removed, and changed payment records, batch settings, addenda, totals, and controls so reviewers do not have to compare 94-character lines manually.

Metadata that can create harmless noise

Creation date, creation time, file ID modifier, trace sequencing, batch numbers, and recalculated controls may differ after a legitimate rebuild. Review their cause instead of treating every byte change as a payment change.

A review order for material changes

  • Start with entry count and debit or credit totals.
  • Check receiver, routing, account, amount, and transaction-code changes.
  • Review SEC code, effective date, company ID, and addenda.
  • Confirm control differences follow the changed records.

Using comparison as an audit artifact

Retain both source files and the comparison result with the related approval. The report explains differences but does not determine whether either file is authorized or bank-acceptable.

Questions about comparing ACH files

Can I ignore file creation timestamps?

Yes, when they are expected rebuild metadata. Payment, batch, addenda, and control changes still require review.

Does a different trace number always mean a different payment?

No. Trace sequences can be regenerated, so compare the receiver, amount, transaction code, and context as well.

Will comparison validate both files?

No. Run validation separately when structural correctness matters.
